Discussion Ideas

The Native Americans and their customs and cultures are a great place to start. You can find easy to read picture books on Native Americans such as Squanto and Pochahontas. Depending on the level of students will depend on the depth of your discussion and depth. The following is a list of Native American topics to explore:
  • Totem poles
  • Teepees
  • Canoes
  • Tribes (local and national)
  • Hunting
  • Food
  • Family life
  • Music and arts

The Pilgrims had different customs and cultures and you can find many picture books on them as well. Try the following topics to explore from the Pilgrims:
  • Housing
  • Food
  • Family life
  • Hunting
  • Music and arts
  • Transportation

Then, after discussing both groups the students can compare and contrast lifestyles and customs. Some ideas on how to do that:
  • A debate (have one half of the class defend the Native Americans and the other half defend the Pilgrims)
  • A Venn diagram
  • A group PowerPoint
  • Dress up day
  • Having a representative from a local Native American tribe speak to the class
  • Make butter
  • Create diaramas
